We edit and proofread for business and government
Our proofreading and editing services
Organisations engage an editor to:
- ensure their meaning is clear and their document can be understood the first time it’s read
- check spelling and grammar
- straighten up minor formatting problems
- ensure consistency in style and usage throughout their document or suite of documents
- ensure the organisation’s ‘voice’ is consistent throughout, even across multiple authors.
These are the most common tasks we perform. Our specific services are spelled out more fully below.
As the name suggests, a structural edit involves appraising the overall structure and shape of the document. Is it in a logical order, easy to follow, complete, or indeed too long?
When we edit grant applications and tender responses, we look for whether the text fully answers the questions and presents your application in the best possible way. We may recommend strengthening an answer or shifting some material to another section.
Ideally, a structural edit should be done fairly early on in the writing of the piece.
Sometimes called line editing (because editors approach the task line by line), here we focus on words and sentences. Is the writing concise, it is suitable for your target readership, and is it in plain English?
We look for consistency in terms, spelling and ‘voice’, especially if several staff have written your document. We ensure it complies with your style guide or preferences, we pick up typos, inconsistencies and errors of fact, and we make sure the information you present is as clear and unambiguous as possible.
This is a final check for any typos or other errors. We check web links, layout, line breaks and page breaks.
You are welcome to specify what is in scope for your edit or proofread. Many clients ask for a copyedit in Word followed by a proofread in PDF (which may be an InDesign document).
Our experience is that most documents require a combination of all three services listed here, all at once. That’s fine with us – we are realistic about timelines and budgets.
